Kolektivo Festival — Recap and Reflection (2022)
On October 22, 2022, more than 700 people came to Landhuis Chobolobo — the 120-year-old Blue Curaçao distillery in Curaçao — for the first Kolektivo Innovation Festival: the largest Regenerative Finance and Impact Tech event the Caribbean had held. Forty speakers across two stages, local vendors, an NFT gallery, live music, and a community currency running in production. Here’s a recap of the evening and a short reflection four years on.
The evening
On the Kunuku stage, Stefen Deleveaux of the Caribbean Blockchain Alliance hosted six hours of talks on Web3 and Regenerative Finance. On the Kura stage, Celo co-founder Rene Reinsberg spoke on prosperity for all, Dr. Nadina Galle of MIT introduced the Internet of Nature, and Prime Minister Gilmar Pisas joined a conversation about digitalizing the island. Pat Rawson and Luuk Weber shared where Kolektivo stood — 40+ local projects funded through impact grants and significant progress in building Regenerative Financial tools (full details in our Impact Report 2022).

Around the stages were booths from local vendors and grantees, a women-in-tech panel, an NFT gallery of mostly Caribbean artists, and a dance party courtesy of Tera Kòrá.
The community currency
At the entrance we launched the Kolektivo Wallet, built by Zed Labs on Celo, alongside the Kolektivo Guilder (kG) — a community currency pegged one-to-one to the Antillean Guilder. In one evening: 299 downloads, 194 new wallets, and 76 people who made purchases (about a quarter of everyone who downloaded). NAf. 1,940 was airdropped to new wallets and NAf. 629 was spent with local vendors across 93 transactions. Total network fees for the night came to NAf. 0.0053.

Vendors onboarded on the spot with almost no training, and nearly every transaction went through. The friction we saw was in the packaging — TestFlight installs, small screens, venue internet — not the concept.
Reflection, four years on
As we had to downscope our efforts in 2023, we didn’t host another festival, but instead hosted the Kolektivo Conference 2023. In addition, Kolektivo spent the years since heads-down: the UNICEF Venture Fund cohort, the MVP, and the Trinidad pilot, through a crypto and carbon credit winter that slowed the whole ecosystem.
The festival made a few things clear. The community turns out for impact and technology. Real-world crypto payments work, even on island internet. And bringing local and global builders into one room is what made the night what it was. A festival creates energy; it takes an institution to sustain it — which is what we’ve spent the quiet years building toward.
